Our STORY

Williams Group: A Legacy of Family and Community

James (Jim) Henry Williams immigrated to Australia from England and began his journey as a farmer in Tyalgum, just outside of Murwillumbah. In April 1935, James purchased a seed and produce store from the Winterbon family. As the business grew, his children, Quida and Harry, joined the company. However, with the onset of World War II, Harry enlisted in the AIF, leaving James, Quida, and younger brother Earle to manage the business. After the war, Harry returned, and alongside Earle, they gradually took over from their father. In 1953, JH Williams & Sons was officially established, reflecting the family's deep commitment to serving the local community with integrity and honesty.

The company steadily expanded, and in 1970, Earle’s son Bruce Williams joined the team, working closely with Harry on the agricultural side of the business. By then, JH Williams & Sons had grown to include a hardware store, a BP fuel depot in Tweed Heads South, BP Murwillumbah, a fresh produce packing house, and rural produce divisions across Tweed Heads, Cudgen, Alstonville, Kyogle, and Southport.

In 1986, the company shifted its focus to supplying the building industry, selling the produce, rural, and fuel divisions. This strategic decision allowed the business to grow through the acquisition of building supply stores in Southport, Murwillumbah, Casino, Byron Bay, Goonellabah, Grafton, and Ballina.

Today, Williams Group Australia remains a family-owned business, staying true to its founding principles while adapting to the changing needs of the community. Under the leadership of Bruce Williams, Managing Director, and Lyndon Poirrier, General Manager, the company continues to thrive. With a strong management team and a vision for the future, Bruce and Lyndon are excited to face new challenges, ensuring that Williams Group remains a cornerstone of the building industry for years to come.
